Tender perennial with slightly serrated oval, pointed leaves and large, salvia-like flowers (to 2in tall) with a purple lower lip, the upper part being white with purple hairs. Flowers in summer. Actually a member of the Acanthus family despite the common name of Giant Salvia. Grow in loam based compost in good light. We are not yet sure how hardy this is so best kept a few degrees above freezing to be safe.

Unless otherwise indicated our plants are supplied in the following pot sizes according to category. Dimensions refer to either the pot diameter (cm) or volume (litre);

  • Exotics/Conservatory & House Plants, Succulents: mostly as young plants in 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)  or 1 litre pots
  • Hardy Perennials, Ferns and Grasses: 1 litre (approx. 12cm diameter)
  • Herbs: 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)
  • Hardy Shrubs and Climbers: 1.5 or 2 litre 
  • Potted Bulbs: variable- please see "Quantity or Pot size" on plant information page 
  • Dormant Bulbs, Tubers and Bare-root perennials come either bagged or wrapped without a pot

The exact size of plants will vary with the growing season and may be cut back in accordance with normal pruning regimes or to fit in the box if they are excessively tall.
