A large deciduous shrub or small tree with spiny branches; yellowish-green flowers are followed by bunches of shining red fruits that mature to black. Like the Alder Buckthorn (Alnus Frangula, q.v.) the flowers attract Brimstone butterflies and their caterpillars feed on the leaves. Plant a few of these and help halt the decline of this beautiful butterfly. Tolerant of chalky soil.
