Tomato Plants

You can grow tomatoes outside in a nice warm sunny spot, some varieties are better grown in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Be sure to wait until all risk of frost has passed (usually towards the end of May in the UK), and harden the plants off before planting in their final position. They can be planted deeper than they are in their pots, roots will grow from any nodes underground.

Cordon/vine varieties require side shooting and support for the best yields. Bush types do not require side shooting, but may need some support to keep the fruit off the ground. Water and regularly and feed with Tomato feed once the first truss has set.

Harvest July to October. Any unripe fruit at the end of the season will ripen indoors on a sunny windowsill.

Tomatoes are high in Vitamin C and lycopene which is thought to help protect against UV skin damage.
