Plectranthus - more info

There are many species of Plectranthus with a variety of habits, leaf shape and flower colour. Many have aromatic leaves too. They come from Southern and tropical Africa, where they mostly grow in shady places, and do best if kept out of direct sun in temperate climates. They can be planted in pots, or bedded out in tropical plantings.
They are very sensitive to frost, so need to be kept in a heated greenhouse, conservatory or on a windowsill for the winter.
Pot in normal potting comost, and feed occasionally with tomato food to encourage flowering.
Some species have been transferred to Coleus.

Pot Sizes

  • Exotics/Conservatory & House Plants, Succulents: mostly as young plants in 7 to 9cm (approx. 0.5 litre)  or 1 litre pots
  • Hardy Perennials, Ferns and Grasses: 1 litre (approx. 12cm diameter)
  • Hardy Shrubs and Climbers: 1.5 or 2 litre

The exact size of plants will vary with the growing season and may be cut back in accordance with normal pruning regimes or to fit in the box if they are excessively tall.
